*The University of Nalanda was established 450 CE under the patronage of the Gupta emperors. It has been called “one of the first great universities in recorded history.” The Buddha and  is mentioned as having several times stayed at Nalanda. It was one of the world’s first residential universities. In its heyday it accommodated over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers.

*The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when Sir Jogendra Singh of the Viceroy’s Executive Council set up a committee whose task was to consider the creation of Higher Technical Institutions for post-war industrial development in India. The first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in May 1950 at the site of the Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur.

*Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was established as the first national institute for post-graduate studies and research in management by Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with MIT Sloan School of Management, Government of West Bengal, Ford Foundation and Indian industry.

*Historically legal education in India was open only to graduates and seen merely as professional training. Dismayed at the quality of legal education in conventional universities, several members of the legal fraternity debated a new system of legal education through the 1970s and 1980s.The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) was thus established in 1987 after a statute was enacted for that purpose by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Karnataka, and has officially existed since August 29 1987.

*All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India. AIIMS was inaugurated in 1956, and was built with a grant from the New Zealand Government. AIIMS was established in New Delhi after former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s intitial proposal to set up the institute in Calcutta was turned down by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.

Architecture and Literature of Karnataka

* The Kadambas were the first indigenous dynasty to use Kannada, the language of the soil at an administrative level. In the history of Karnataka, this era serves as a broad based historical starting point in the study of the development of region as an enduring geo-political entity and Kannada as an important regional language.

* The Badami Chalukya era was an important period in the development of South Indian architecture. Their style of architecture is called “Chalukyan architecture” or “Karnata Dravida architecture”. Nearly a hundred monuments built by them, rock cut and structural, can be found in Aihole, Badami, Pattadakal and Mahakuta in modern Karnataka state

* Rashtrakuta Dynasty rule saw many scholars contributing important works in Kannada and Sanskrit. Amoghavarsha I wrote Kavirajamarga, a landmark literary work in the Kannada language. This was the era of Adikavi Pampa, widely regarded as one of the greatest Kannada writers. His famous work, Adipurana was written in champu (mixed prose-verse style) style. Pampa’s other notable work was Vikramarjuna Vijaya , the author’s version of the Hindu epic, Mahabharata, with Arjuna as the hero.

* The Hoysala empire is remembered today primarily for its temple architecture. The Chennakesava Temple at Belur, the Hoysaleswara temple at Halebidu, the Chennakesava Temple at Somanathapura, and the temples at Arasikere, Amruthapura, Belavadi and Nuggehalli are all notable examples of Hoysala art.

* The Vijayanagara Empire’s legacy includes many monuments spread over South India, the best known being the group at Hampi. Another element of the Vijayanagara style is the carving of large monoliths such as the Sasivekalu Ganesha and Kadalekalu Ganesha at Hampi, the Gomateshwara statues in Karkala and Venur, and the Nandi bull in Lepakshi. The Vijayanagara temples of Bhatkal, Kanakagiri, Sringeri and other towns of coastal Karnataka are examples of their style of Architecture.

1. Kadalekayi Parishe fair is held annually near the Bull temple in Basavanagudi. Legend has it that a bull started grazing in the well-grown groundnut crop, at this, a farmer got furious and hit the bull with a club. Immediately the bull sat down becoming motionless and was transformed into a stone. For their repentance they decided to build a temple for the bull and offer the first groundnuts to the sacred bull every year.

The Brahmins Coffee bar near Shankar Mutt was started way back in 1965 by K.V. Nageshwar Rao as a self-service restaurant, during the days when Bangaloreans would nurse half a cup of coffee for hours. Nothing has changed since then including the Menu consisting of Soft and fluffy Idlis, Vadas,Khara Bath, Kesari Bath and unlimited chutney. Adigas, one of the most popular food chains in Bangalore is run by Nageshwar Rao’s five sons.

The Cubbon Park Police Station was constructed in 1906 in Bangalore initially as a guard room to protect the statue of Victoria and is revived and maintained by the UB Group now.

In Cantonment, the names of many of its streets are derived from military nomenclature — Artillery Road, Brigade Road, Infantry Road and Cavalry Road. The British representative maintained a residence within the cantonment area and his quarters was called the Residency and hence the name Residency Road.

The 4th ‘T’ Block in Bangalore South is rather uniquely named owing to the fact that it was originally a village called Tayappanahalli
